Matting with a Single Punch

Matting with a punch

All you have is a single sized punch. How do you make matting with that single punch? This post will show you just how to do that. It is easier than you might think.

All you need is a couple of pieces of scrap cardstock, your sentiment, and your punch.

Here we are using the Story Label Punch. I love this punch as it is a great size for many of our sentiments. But there is only one problem. The punch is only one size, so what do I do if I want to put a mat behind the white sentiment to make it pop a bit?

Stamp and punch out your sentiment on whatever light or white paper you like. In my case I’m using Basic White cardstock.

Matting with a single punch

You need to punch out two additional punch outs with your punch in the color you want to matte your sentiment with. To match my project, I’m using Gorgeous Grape cardstock. Once you have your punch outs, cut one long ways (like a hot dog) and one short ways (like a hamburger.)

Adhering the Matting

Next place adhesive on the back of the sentiment punch out. I like to add the long sides of the matte piece to the sentiment first. It is easiest to turn your sentiments front side up so you can see how much overhang you are leaving so you get it even all the way around. Place one side then the other.

If you were to turn it to look at the back, you’d see there is a space in the center where the matte pieces don’t come together. That is correct.

After you have both sides on, adhere the ends on. And there you have it! You’ve just completed matting a sentiment with a single punch!
