Wings

The first step is to put together the parts and pieces, then we’ll assemble the whole thing. To make the wings, you’ll need the two strips that are 4¾” long. These should have a score at 2 and 4¼. The section between the end and the 2″ score mark needs to stay straight. The second section needs to be rounded with your bone folder. Once you’ve rounded from the score line on, adhere the tab to the straight section to form a wing. Repeat with the other strip. set these aside to dry.

Graduation Cap

The only strip that isn’t an inch wide is the one for the graduation cap. Round this one with your bone folder, then adhere it into a circle. Once the adhesive has set, glue this to the bottom of the 1¾” square, placing the seam facing one of the corners. This way the seam can be placed at the back of the owl’s head. Use a good quality glue like Art Glitter Glue so it will dry clear. Set this aside to dry.

Eyes and Head

The two shortest strips belong to the eyes. These will each hold 1 Hershey Kiss. Form each strip into a hexagon. I’ve found that if you take about 1/16 of an inch off the non-tab side with your scissors, you’ll have a better fit with the Hershey Kiss. (See the video for clear example) Adhere these together with the tab. Next adhere them to each other, gluing only at one of the corners, leaving both top and bottom with a flat surface.

Next take the 7½” strip. This one should only have 4 score lines. The outer scored areas should be folded into a mountain fold and the two inner scores should be valley folds as shown in this image. This is forming the head and ears.

Next, we need to round from the tops of the ears to the ends of the strip on both sides with our bone folders. This forms the shape of the head. Once you’ve formed the head, adhere the section between the ears to the flat area of the eyes.

Form your ears so they are even, then bring the rounded strip down and skip one section of the eye hexagon and adhere the rounded head to the lower angled side section. This will keep the ears in place. Finally, adhere the ends together under the “chin”.

Set this aside while we work on the body.

Body

Adhere the 7¼” strip into a hexagon. Grab the two 7″ strips. You will need to do a unique fold designed especially for holding Hershey Kisses. Fold 2 mountain folds, 2 valley folds, 2 mountain folds. I find the easiest way to do this is to fold away from me the whole time and turn my paper strip. Fold, fold, turn paper, fold fold, turn paper, fold fold. You should end up with something that looks similar to the bottom two strips in the picture to the right.

These, when compressed, will fit into the middle of the hexagon body and hold the Hershey Kisses.

Assembling the Hershey Kiss Graduation Owls

Hershey Kiss Graduation Owls

Now that we have all our parts made, we can start assembling our Hershey Kiss Graduation Owls. First pick a side of the body hexagon and adhere the head onto that side. If you have self closing tweezers, these are great to help you hold things closed while your glue sets up. Next, adhere a wing on either side of the head. You can begin to see the owl taking shape. If you don’t want a graduation owl, here is where you would stop. Add the center of the body and skip to the step with the eyes.

Roll up the diploma and glue inside one of the wings. Adhere the cap onto the head. Cut out a triangle freehand, leaving a tab on the base. Adhere the pointed end of the triangle to the oval. The tab should fit right under the eyes. Glue this tab in place so the oval hangs freely down over the front of the owl.

Place the graduation cap on the head of the owl. Again, make sure you use a good glue that will dry clear. Place a rhinestone that you’ve colored black with out blends markers in the center of the cap.

Layer the two black punched circles onto the yellow/orange circles and, using a glue dot, adhere them to the bottom of 2 Hershey Kisses. Place these into the eye slots.

Filling the Graduation Owls with Hershey Kisses

Hershey Kiss Graduation Owls

The easiest way to fill the body with Hershey Kisses is to place the pointed end in first. Fill one row with all going a single direction first, then insert the one going the other direction. Do the same with the other row. They should fit in snugly and stay in on their own.

There are a lot of steps to making these Hershey Kiss Graduation Owls, but once you’ve made a couple, it really doesn’t take that long to make a bunch of them. You could give them to your child’s whole class!
