Waterfall Card

Hi everyone! Today we’re making a waterfall card. Really, it isn’t as hard as it sounds. It does take a bit longer to make as you are essentially decorating seven panels, but waterfall cards are fun and interactive for the recipients. Let’s get started!

Decorating the Front of the Waterfall Card

Waterfall Card Front

Decorate the front of your card in landscape. Using the Painted Poppies Stamp set, stamp the poppies across the 2 5/8 x 5½” piece of Basic White Cardstock. Then with the two splotch stamps in the set, “color” the poppies with both the Fresh Freesia and Gorgeous Grape, making sure you stamp off before you stamp the splotch onto the poppies.

Stamp Happy Birthday twice from the Peaceful Moments Stamp Set and die cut them both out using the Painted labels die set. Using the same die set, cut out one matte for the Happy Birthday from Gorgeous Grape cardstock. Set one Happy Birthday and this mat aside. Place the 7″ ribbon across the bottom of the poppies. Pop the Happy birthday into the lower right corner and attach the 8″ ribbon tied into a bow. Attach all this to the 2¾ x 5½” Gorgeous Grape mat, then attach to the front of the Fresh Freesia card base. The Front of the card is complete.

Take the 5¼ x 4″ piece of Basic White and adhere it to the left side on the inside of the card. Set all this aside.

Decorating the Waterfall for the Inside

Inside panels of waterfall card

Now for the waterfall. Decorate all 6 pieces of 3¾ x ¾ white cardstock. The other Happy Birthday and Gorgeous Grape mat you just cut out are the last one. Round the two outside corners of each square. Do the same with each of the 4×4 pieces of colored cardstock. If you want to see me decorate each of the 6 panels, watch the video below. Once you’ve decorated the inside panels, attach them to the colored mats. The way I set the mats up is that they are every other color, so you may want to pay attention to this as you adhere them so they are in the order you’d like them.

Creating the Mechanism for the Waterfall Card

Now take the mechanism piece of cardstock. It should be the largest piece you have left
(9¾ x 3 7/8″). With your scoreboard, score every ¼” from 3¼ to 4¾”. You should end up with 7 score lines. Fold and burnish these score lines.

When you lay this out on your table, you should have a larger unscored area and a smaller unscored area. Lay the smaller unscored area to your right. Place adhesive between the first and second score lines on the right. Turn your stack of waterfall pages over so the bottom page is on top. Grap the bottom page and adhere it, lining it up with the second score line. Next place adhesive between the second and third score lines. Place the next page here. Repeat this until all pages are placed. Once your adhesive has had a minute to adhere to your top piece, turn each page individually to make sure they aren’t stuck together.

Next take your 1×8½” strip of Gorgeous Grape cardstock. I’m showing a white strip here so you can see the placement. Turn your waterfall cards over to you are back to the short unscored area (this area should be under all your cards) You want to adhere this strip about ½ from the end of the short side of the mechanism (on the side between the mechanism and the cards), leaving the wings hanging over each side. Make sure you don’t get adhesive anywhere but under the strip.

Making a Pull Loop

Close the mechanism by laying the long flap to the back side of the cards. Don’t try to lay the long side over the front of the cards. Take the 3″ piece of ribbon and adhere it to the back side of the long flap. Depending on the ribbon, this may take a bit of patience and holding in place. Once the ribbon is in place, grab your reinforcement piece of cardstock and adhere it over the ribbon on the back side of the mechanism.

Finishing Up

The final step in making the mechanism is folding over those wings from the 1″ strip onto the back of the mechanism. Adhere them together. Don’t adhere them to anything else. If you do, your waterfall card won’t move correctly.

Attaching the Waterfall to the Card

Place adhesive on the 1″ strip ONLY. Align the entire mechanism into the card base and adhere it down. The last thing you need to do is to flip all the pages up and put adhesive onto the short piece of the mechanism and adhere the last page down to the short side of the mechanism. This will keep that last page from popping up and showing the mechanism.

At this point, you should be able to hold the card in one hand and pull on the ribbon loop to work your waterfall card. For another cool card project, click here!
