Preparation work

Triple Box Pop Up Card

Stamp, decorate, and color all your Whisper White Pieces. Adhere them to their appropriate mats. Anything that will be colored with the blends markers needs to be stamped with the Memento Black ink. Let dry for a few minutes before coloring so the black has time to set. Otherwise the ink may run. Stamp the snowflakes around the gnome images in Seaside spray ink. Stamp the sentiment “There’s no place like Gnome for the Christmas Season” on the ¾ x 2½” piece of Whisper White Cardstock in Cherry Cobbler ink. Adhere this to its appropriate mat, as well. Set these aside for a moment while we put the card base together.

Assembling the Small Boxes

Once you’ve scored your card bases, fold and burnish all your score lines. Then miter the ends of the tabs on all three pieces. We’ll work with the two skinny pieces first.

For simplicity sake, we are going to make an “I” for inside on three panels of both the skinny pieces. So, with the ½” tab facing up on the top, the “I” is on the first full panel down, skip one, then the bottom two panels. Do this to both pieces. This is where we will place DSP or patterned paper to decorate the insides of our cubes.

Next, turn your strips over and mark an “O” for outside on the two panels directly beneath the ½” tabs. This will help us keep everything right side up and in place later.

Now that we’ve made these marks so we know where things go, let’s start placing things. Take your 6 pieces of 2 x 2″ patterned paper and adhere them down on the panels we marked with the “I’s” These will decorate the insides of our cubes.

Place adhesive on the tab, fold the last panel over and adhere the tab to the outside of the panel. This will give you a cube that will lay flat no matter which way you fold it.

Once you’ve made your cubes, now is the time to grab those matted images you stamped and colored earlier. These we are going to place onto the panels we marked with an “O”. Making sure the seam is at the top, facing away from you, flatten your cube down so it is laying flat on the desktop. The two panels with the “o’s ” should be showing and the seam should be to the top away from you. Place your matted images onto the panels.

Do the same with both cubes.

Set the cubes aside for a moment while we work on the big box.

Assembling the Big Box

Just like the small boxes, once we fold and burnish our score lines, we are going to mark the inside and outside of our box. Mark the two outer full panels with an “I” as shown in the picture.

Mat the 2 pieces of patterned paper left over onto 2 of the pieces of Cherry Cobbler matting measuring 2 x 5 1/8″. Adhere these onto the two panels marked with the “I’s”. Next, place glue onto the ½” tab and fold up the right side and adhere the tab to the outside of that panel.

Once you’ve made your big box, we’re going to mark our outside panels so we know front from back. The two panels with the patterned paper on the inside are the back of the box. These should also include the seam. Mark these somewhere in the middle of the panel with a “B” for back. The other two panels are the front. Mark these either towards the top or bottom with an “F”. Don’t mark the “F” toward the middle of the panel as it may show.

On the back panels, marked with “B”, adhere the other 2 pieces of Cherry Cobbler Cardstock measuring 5 1/8 x 2″ and the stamped Whisper White piece measuring
5 x 1 7/8″. These should cover the seam. This is why I don’t mind having the seam on the outside of the panel. If you need more space to write on, you are welcome to adhere a second piece of Whisper White cardstock to the other panel.

Putting the Triple Box Pop Up Card Together

Turn your box over to the front of the card. It is time to adhere the smaller boxes to the front of the card. Fold the small box flat and place adhesive on the panel with the seam on it. With the seam at the top, adhere the small cube onto the large card box, making sure you line up the bottoms and don’t cross over the score line. Be liberal with the glue as this will be a moving mechanism. Do the same with the second box.

Once you have the two boxes lined up, take your bone folder and give it a good press to engage the glue. You also should have 2 matted pieces left that fit right into the space above the cubes. Adhere these now.

Finishing Touches to the Triple Box Pop Up Card

Stamp, color and cut out the tree stump in the Gnome for the Holidays stamp set. We’re going to make this a “floating” element on the card. But we’re going to make it into a mushroom. How to do that?

You’ll need a 1¾” Circle punch. Punch out a scrap piece of Cherry Cobbler cardstock. You’ll need a little more than a half circle. Then round the bottom a bit. With your black Stampin’ Write Marker, outline the shape of the mushroom cap.

Then with a white gel pen make random polka dots all over the mushroom cap. This will need to dry for a bit so we don’t smudge the white gel pen. Once the white dots are dry and won’t smudge, you’ll want to adhere the mushroom cap onto the tree stump.

Adhering the Floating Elements

Now is the time for the ¾” punched circles to come into play. Both floating elements are attached the same way. Fold the circles in half and adhere one to each side of the center fold. Then, place adhesive onto the other half of the circles and press the mushroom cap onto the circles. Make sure your mushroom doesn’t extend below the folds in the lower cubes or above the top of the card. Repeat the process with the “There’s no place like Gnome for the Christmas Season” sentment. This will be placed inside the two small boxes so it can be seen when the card sits open.

And there you have done it! You’ve made a Gnome for the Holidays Triple Box Pop Up Card! Congratulations!
