Making the Template for the Paper Christmas Ornament
With your scoreboard, score your template strip on the long side at 7/8, 2 7/8, 4½, 6½”. Next take your 2½” circle punch and punch semi-circles on both sides of the two largest rectangles, making sure you stay within the score lines. This is your template.
Using the Template
Line your template up with one end of a DSP strip. The strip will be ½” longer than the template but the same width. Using a scoring stylus, score around all the semi-circles and at the end where the DSP is longer then the template. Do this with all 3 strips. Place strong tape adhesive on the ½” end between the score line and the end of the paper.
Bend all the semi-circles down to train them in the direction you need them to be trained. Once you’ve done this, straighten them back again.
Placing Your Ribbon Hanger
Punch a hold in one strip of DSP between the semi-circles on the end closest to the adhesive. Make a hole reinforcer from a scrap piece of cardstock and place it on the inside of the DSP over the hole.
Next, grab your 12″ of ribbon. Fold it in half and form a loop. Tie a knot in the ends and feed the ribbon through the hole from back to front. This will be how you hang your paper Christmas ornament on your Christmas Tree.
Assembling the Paper Christmas Ornament
From here on, I’ll refer to the strips as strip 1, 2, and 3 and tubes 1, 2, and 3. Strip and tube 1 is the one with the ribbon. Either of the others can be 2 or 3.
Remove the adhesive from strip 1 and form it into tube 1. Adhere it together right up to the score line.
Next take strip 2 and form it into tube 2. Slide tube 2 inside tube 1. Make sure the seam of tube 2 is under the ribbon in tube 1. Our objective is to hide all the seams on all the tubes once the Paper Christmas Ornament is complete.
Feed strip 3 without forming it into a tube through tube 2. Then you’ll feed the other end of strip 3 over tube 1 and through the other side of tube 2. Once you have both ends sticking out over tube 2, you can peal off the adhesive backing and adhere the strip into a tube.
At this point, you’re almost finished. But as I said earlier, our goal is to hide all the seams. We still have a seam showing. Now we have to gently ease tube #3 around so the seam is hiding underneath tube #2. Once we do that, our semi-circles will all be in the correct positions.
The final step is to re-bend all the semi-circles down into shape again. Once that is complete, your Paper Christmas Ornament is ready to hang on the tree!
