I’m here today to make it easy for you. I’m going to show you the bare minimum basic card making supplies and tools you need to start making cards today!
Basics
The most basic tool set includes a pair of precision tipped scissors, a bone folder, adhesive, a piercing tool and a pad. With these few tools, you can start on your card making journey.
From right to left in the picture, a bone folder gives you a sharp crease in your cardstock. This gives you a professional finish to your cards. The precision tipped snips are a must for cutting out small images to place on your cards. Stampin’ Up!’s snips are good for both lefties and righties.
The Take Your Pick tool is a multi-purpose tool. It has a sharp piercing tip to make holes in paper and other media. It also has scoring tips for scoring cardstock and a spatula for picking up things. The other end of the take your pick tool has putty in it, to help with picking up tiny objects like pearls and sequins. If you don’t have one of these, you need one! The adhesive gives you a good and convenient glue to put your projects together. And finally, the Stampin’ Pierce Mat is great for protecting work surfaces as you paper pierce. It also helps get even pressure and ink coverage with detailed or background stamps.
A basic ruler is also very helpful at times. You don’t have to break the bank to start this hobby. And once you start, you will save on all your greeting cards. Hallmark and American Greetings Cards in the stores cost upwards of $8-10 a piece. Put that toward your tools and supplies, you’ll not only be saving money, but enjoying yourself while you do it!

These are the basic card making supplies and tools you absolutely need to start paper crafting. Anything beyond that will definitely make your paper crafting easier, but isn’t necessary to begin with. Of course, you’ll also need cardstock, stamps and ink. With these, I’d suggest buy a multi-pack of good quality cardstock. Stampin’ Up! has awesome multi-packs. Find a neutral ink color like a dark brown or black and a stamp set you like and get started.
