Making this lighthouse book fold card isn’t as difficult as you might think. Actually, the book fold card is fairly simple, once you know where the cuts and scorelines are.
Supplies and measurements
- Cardbase: Basic Black Cardstock 8½ x 5½” scored at 4¼” on long side
- Book fold insert: Basic Gray Cardstock 8½ x 5 3/8″ (we’ll get to scoring and cutting in the directions.)
- Card front: Whisper White Cardstock 5¼ x 4″
- Inside Basic Black Matting: 2 each of 2 1/8 x 3¼”, 2 each of 7/8 x 3¼”
- Inside White Cardstock: 2 each of 1 7/8 x 3″, 2 each of 5/8 x 3″
Book Fold Card Insert Scoring and Cutting
With the short edge along the top of the cutter, line the insert cardstock up at the 1″ mark. Cut from 1 to 7½”. Do the same on the opposite side. Next, on the long side of the cardstock, score at 1 and 2″ between the cut marks only. Next score at 2½” on the outside of the cut marks only. Repeat all three scores on the other end. Finally, score all the way across at 4¼”.
Folding Book Fold Card Insert
First, you’ll need to train your center fold. Fold and burnish the center score line both ways. Next, we’ll concentrate on the outer edge folds. The top and bottom center folds jut forward. Make sure these are folded in the correct position. If not, fold them toward you. Once the centers are folded into the correct positions, you’ll want to fold the other two folds the opposite way, forming an “M.” Burnish these folds. Make sure the book fold center is folded away from you. The last two folds are to fold up the sides to form a “W.” You need to ensure you are only folding score lines. Don’t fold anything that isn’t scored.
Masking Off the Card Front
Stamp the two images that make up the lighthouse. Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to stamp the lighthouse on the sticky side of a sticky note and fussy cut it out. You’ll need this for a mask. Next, take another sticky note and cut off the edge so you have a softer, non-straight edge. We’ll use this to form the basis for the horizon. You’ll also need a 1½” circle punched from the sticky end of the sticky note. Cover the lighthouse image with your mask. Place the 1½” sticky note circle over the top of the lighthouse and place the third sticky note that you “softened” the edge about 1/3 of the way up the front of the cardstock, covering the lighthouse mask.
Sponging the Card Front
Now we’re ready to start sponging. Ink up your sponge with Night of Navy Ink. Remember, anytime you sponge a project, begin sponging off the project on scrap paper first. It will give you a much smoother look. Sponge along the sticky note. You want this area to be fairly dark. Once you have the horizon, fill in the rest of the sky with the Night of Navy Ink. Give this area a lighter touch than the horizon. Be sure to get ink around the circle to give some definition to the moon.
After you do your horizon and sky, you need to turn your sticky note over and place it upside down on the horizon. The reason for this, is when we stamp the water and land, we don’t want them stamping above the horizon.
Once you have repositioned the sticky note, lightly sponge the bottom of the card.
Next, stamp your land and water. When you stamp the water, stamp 3 or 4 times before you re-ink the stamp. this will give your water the illusion of motion.
Finishing the Card Front
The final steps are to remove all the masks, stamp the birds across the sky, and color in the lighthouse with a smokey slate stampin’ write marker.
Card Insides
The process for the inside of the card is exactly the same, without the lighthouse. You line up all 4 of the inside whisper white cards in the order they will be placed in the card. Make sure they are right next to each other. The moon circle is a 1″ circle instead of a 1½” circle. All the sponging and stamping is the same as above, just across the 4 pieces of cardstock.
Assembly of Book Fold Card
Place your inside 4 stamped pieces onto Basic Black mat pieces, then adhere them onto book fold card insert. Adhere the front of the card onto the front of the card base.
When you fold up the insert, there is a “c” around the edges of the outside of the insert. This is the only place you should put adhesive. Position the first side onto the cardbase. Spread adhesive on the second side and close the card over the adhesive. It will naturally go into the correct place and lay flat to fit into an envelope.
